Golden Golden Retriever Puppies

This is the coat the breed is named for: a clear mid gold, warm without being red, the colour most people have in their head before they start looking. It is the middle of the range rather than a compromise, and it is what a great many Golden Retrievers grow into whatever shade they started as.

Puppies in this shade are the most predictable. A puppy that is already mid golden at seven weeks has less distance to travel than a light one, so what you see is closer to what you get. It will still deepen a little, particularly along the back and around the ears.

Golden dogs often look like two colours at once. The body sits at one shade and the feathering on the chest, tail and back legs comes in lighter, sometimes noticeably so. That is normal, it is not a fault, and it is why the same dog can look mid golden in the garden and much paler in a photograph taken indoors.

Photographs lie about this colour more than any other. Warm indoor lighting pushes a mid golden dog towards red and cool daylight pushes it towards cream. If you are choosing a puppy on colour from photographs, ask for one taken outdoors on an overcast day, which is the closest thing to neutral light anybody has at home. Every photograph on this site was taken in daylight and none of them are colour corrected.

As with every shade here, the coat tells you nothing about the dog. Temperament comes from the parents and from the eight weeks after birth, not from the colour chart.
