What eight weeks in this house involves
Floor level, from day one
The whelping box is in the room we live in. Puppies wake to a kettle, a vacuum, boots on tile and a door that keeps opening, weeks before any of it could frighten them.
Handled by adults, every day
Each puppy is picked up, turned over, has its feet held and its ears looked in. A veterinary table should not be the first time any of that happens to a dog.
Eight weeks, and not a day earlier
Whatever is offered and however convenient the date would be. The last fortnight with the mother is where bite inhibition comes from, and nobody can teach it in her place.
Matched to the household, not sold to it
We would rather tell you that none of this litter suits your week than sell you the wrong dog and hear about it in a year. Several people a season get told to wait.

We were told before we visited that he would be the wrong dog for a house with nobody in it during the day, which is the opposite of what we expected to hear from somebody selling a puppy. We changed our working week instead of changing our minds, and eight months on that was clearly the right call.
What sold us was being asked what happens when we go on holiday. Nobody else asked. Every other breeder we spoke to wanted to know when we could pay.
I had never had a dog. I said so, expecting to be talked into the biggest puppy in the litter, and instead got a long email about which one would forgive a beginner. That is the puppy we have and she has forgiven a great deal.
