In the house with us

Thatch is the youngest of the dogs and the one we would pick if we could only keep one. He has Barrow’s stillness without Barrow’s size, and he is unusually careful around anything smaller than himself.

He is a mid golden dog whose feathering came in much lighter than his body, which is a good illustration of something we explain on the colour pages: a Golden Retriever is very often two shades at once, and the one you see in a photograph depends entirely on the light.

Why this dog is bred from

Every dog here has been seen by our veterinarian, and we will tell you what was found on any of them if you ask. There are no registry papers, no hip, elbow, eye or cardiac scoring and no genetic panel behind any of them, and we will not imply otherwise. A claim we cannot back is worth less to you than no claim at all.

What decides it is temperament. A dog that is anxious, sharp or unhappy around people is not bred from here, whatever else is true about him, because a litter learns how to be a dog from its mother long before it learns anything from us.
