Cream Golden Retriever Puppies

Cream is the palest coat a Golden Retriever comes in, somewhere between white and pale wheat, and it is the shade people most often arrive asking for by name. It is worth knowing three things before you set your heart on it.

It is not a separate breed and it is not rare. You will see cream dogs advertised as English Cream, White Retriever or rare white. There is no such breed. Cream is a coat colour, it appears in litters throughout the breed, and any price premium attached to the word is a premium on the word rather than on the dog.

A cream puppy is born pale and usually stays pale. Colour in this breed tends to deepen with age, but a genuinely cream puppy has less to deepen into. The reliable tell is the ear: the fur on the ear tip is the closest thing you get to a preview of the adult coat, and on a cream dog it stays light. If a puppy is sold to you as cream and the ears are noticeably darker than the body, expect the adult dog to be light golden rather than cream.

Pale coats show more, not less. Mud, grass stains and the rust coloured marks that appear around the eyes and mouth all read louder on a cream dog. None of it is a health problem. It just means a cream Golden looks scruffy sooner after a wet walk than a dark one does.

What cream does not tell you is anything at all about temperament, health, size or trainability. There is no evidence that pale Goldens are calmer, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a colour.
